The best tool to study language in the era of big data
This course helps students understand how English is used around the world through corpus, which is a database with a large collection of linguistic data. Students observe language use patterns such as frequent words, collocations, use of prepositions, and phrasal verbs in online corpus, for example, Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), British National Corpus (BNC), and the International Corpus of English (ICE). The applications of corpus in TESOL and other fields in applied linguistics are also discussed in the course.
